A mown avenue through coconut groves on the Sichon land

Daily life

Living at Sichon

The romance of a quiet coast survives about four days of real life. Then somebody needs a dentist, or a part for the water pump, or a flight home at short notice.

So here is the practical picture, including the parts that are harder here.

Distances by road unless stated. Outside the towns, reckon roughly a minute a kilometre.

Lotus's at Sichon is a full store rather than a convenience outlet: pharmacy, bank, chain food counters and the usual non-food departments, about ten minutes from the land. It is the single fact that most surprises people who assume a mainland Gulf coast means a long drive for groceries. It does not.

There are cafés, beachfront seafood the length of the coast, and a handful of kitchens doing pizza, steak and a Western breakfast, with more of them at Khanom. It is not Phuket's restaurant scene. It is not trying to be. But you are not living out of a cool box.

Getting in and out

Nakhon Si Thammarat is the closer airport at about 60 kilometres. It has a new terminal built for up to four million passengers a year, against 2024 traffic of about 1.04 million. Be clear about what that does and does not mean today: the runway is 2,100 metres, which limits it to narrowbody aircraft of around 180 seats, and there is no scheduled international service yet. An extension to 2,600 metres is in the programme. What exists now is a domestic airport with room to become more.

Surat Thani is the second option at about 100 kilometres — a materially longer drive, not an equivalent one, but it carries more traffic and more routes.

Bangkok is an hour and a quarter in the air, several times a day, and connects to everywhere. Koh Samui is about 40 kilometres across the water, or about 50 kilometres by road to the Don Sak car ferry.

Schools

There is no international school within forty-five minutes, and the schooling near the coast is Thai.

The nearest genuinely international schools are around Surat Thani, roughly seventy kilometres and an hour and a quarter to an hour and a half each way. Suratthani International School in the city was founded in 2014, is Cognia-accredited and an IB Primary Years candidate, but it runs only to Grade 6. Daniel International School at Kanchanadit, on the Tapi River, opened in 2023, teaches an American curriculum from nursery to Grade 9 and is still building upwards — and runs a weekday host-family boarding programme for families outside the city, which is the arrangement that makes this workable from Sichon.

Nakhon International City School, about an hour and a quarter south, is a municipal school with English-medium streams rather than an international school; it has taught no internationally recognised curriculum above Grade 9 since 2014. Walailak University is fifty minutes away and opened a demonstration school on its campus in May 2026, but that follows the Thai national curriculum.

Above Grade 9 there is no international option on this coast at all. If you have school-age children at home, Sichon is a harder answer than Phuket, and we would tell you so on the first call.

Healthcare

Sichon Hospital, a 400-bed general hospital, covers ordinary needs a few minutes away. Nakhon Si Thammarat city, about seventy-five kilometres, has private hospitals and the province's specialist care. Bangkok Hospital Surat Thani, about seventy-five kilometres and a little over an hour, is the private hospital most foreign residents on this coast use for anything serious.

It is a step down from Phuket's international hospitals. For most people in good health it is entirely workable. For anyone managing a condition needing frequent specialist attention, it is the question to settle before any other.

The season

Driest from January to April, February driest of all. The heavy rain falls October to December and peaks in November — the opposite end of the year to the Andaman coast, which is why this coast is at its best when Phuket is not.

If the plan is to escape the northern winter from January, the timing is close to ideal. If the plan is to be here every November, plan for rain.

The honest part

Three things are genuinely harder here than on Phuket, and it is better to know them now.

Flights. The terminal is built; the international routes are not. More of your journeys will connect through Bangkok than they would from Phuket, and the runway extension that would change that is programmed rather than delivered.

Schools, as above — a real constraint for families, and a long daily drive.

No ready-made expatriate community. Some people have spent thirty years looking for exactly that absence. Others find in month four that they wanted it rather more than they thought. Come in the green season, not the high one, and see which you are.
